Driven to Distraction

Holman Jenkins on Ray LaHood's misguided campaign for stricter laws against "distracted driving."
He calls it a deadly "epidemic" on the highways, but once again he is spreading darkness as much as light. No less a harridan for safety than the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has dubbed his campaign misguided. The group's own studies show that the numerous laws enacted around the country to ban or restrict cellphone use have produced no impact on accident rates. Even where phone use has measurably declined, crashes haven't.
Read it all.

I wrote about this last year. If politicians are going to pass laws against driving while cell phoning they should at least pass one that actually works, don't you think?

Common sense doesn't come through in 16-20 years olds looking down while taking me out on the blue route. In fact, I don't think common sense kicks in on most people until their mid to late 20s, or at least in the people I've interacted with.

I'd immediately arrest perps, take them to the barracks, strap them down to chairs and make them watch "Ishtar" and "Gigli" over and over until you see true pain and remore in their accident-causing faces.

LaHood has twittered that he is supporting Miss South Dakota for Miss America because her "platform" is fighting distracted driving.

A government lightweight backing a creampuff messenger, for a charade of a crisis about a nonexistent problem...your tax dollars at work.

Jake, when you're nearly run off the road by a moron like I have, be sure to come back on here and reiterate how it's still a 'none isting problem', ok?

Steve,
The road to hell is paved with good intentions. The facts don't support this legislative intrusion into our lives.
No amount of anecdotal evidence justifies bad policy.

Jake, you are right on the mark in supporting the position which Mr. Spencer has stated... Thank you for adding some common sense to the argument that our legislators need to apply some common sense to the situation.

jake, you're talking about driving, requiring full focus and attention. common sense tells me i need protection from morons busy looking down and trying to correct their mis-spells while barrleing down the road. Hell, I'm not above horsewhipping these idiots.
