A $25 Billion Art Heist

The looting of the Barnes Foundation for political prestige and power. They've made a very cool movie about it. My print column is up.

If I remember right (Im often wrong but I'm never in doubt) the value of the collection is closer to $35 billion. What I found really interesting was the $30 million allocated by the state to move the Barnes even before a decission to move it had been ruled on. And they couldn't figure out who requested this money. The decission to put the money aside was made by Vince Fumo. Hmmmm.

As for the collection, a Salon style of display (Stacked floor to ceiling) is not a good way to display art. The preferred method is to hang art at eye level, and to give each painting a certain amount of space. As I've mentioned in a previous post, although I believe that Barnes purchased some great works of art, for the most part, he purchased lesser works from great painters. I'll be interested in hearing your opinion when you visit. I have to laugh sometimes when I visit a museum and the docent tells you which paintings are great, but your eyes tell you something else. Who you gonna believe? Me or your lying eyes? Looking forward to hearing your report from the field.
