Not so Noble, A Nobel

President Obama wins the Nobel Peace Prize. Well, the Nobel Committee has certainly raised its standards since awarding one to Yasser Arafat. But not by much.

Accomplishments obviously don't mean much to the Nobel committee. Airy feel-good speeches and personal dreams of a nuclear-free world are good enough.

If they has a Nobel Prize for Comedy, the committee itself would win it.

UPDATE: If Obama wanted to show some real class he would turn back the prize saying it is too early in his tenure to warrant or accept it, and suggest it be given to the brave Chinese dissident Hu Jia, instead.

UPDATE II: And from the Times:
Rarely has an award had such an obvious political and partisan intent. It was clearly seen by the Norwegian Nobel committee as a way of expressing European gratitude for an end to the Bush Administration, approval for the election of America’s first black president and hope that Washington will honour its promise to re-engage with the world.

Instead, the prize risks looking preposterous in its claims, patronising in its intentions and demeaning in its attempt to build up a man who has barely begun his period in office, let alone achieved any tangible outcome for peace.

extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples

Reminds me of several years ago when the Phillies' Bobby Abreu won a Gold Glove for his work in the outfield. In lieu of celebrating in Philadelphia, true Phillies fans know his award was a sham as he refused to put in the extra effort to catch balls near the wall, dive for catches, or make those lightning throws Victorino is now known for.

This award is a joke. Obama's done nothing more than 1) get Elected and 2) Initiate talks with our foreign neighbors as any incoming president would do. At least Jimmy Carter worked for his Nobel prize.

Now let's hear bob and anon-iano respond with the "Well Bush tore down our relations with XXX" bullcrap.

Steve - Nope. I'm just going to sit here, smile, and enjoy watching all of you Obama bashers thrash about like gasping, drowning rats while President Obama heals this nation and regains the international respect that it once had.

LOL. Boy this stuff really gets to you guys!

Lets face it, we should have been suspicious when Le Duc Tho of North Vietnam won the Nobel but confirmation should have been realized when the man who won the cold war without a shot being fired did not receive a Nobel but his adversary in the Soviet Union did. You know who I mean, the 40th US president, Ronald Reagan. Quite an accomplishment wouldn't you say? Reagan said: if you don't care who gets the credit, then you can accomplish any thing. It's called, Humility, something that is rarely seen today.

"Initiate talks with our foreign neighbors as any incoming president would do."

Except for Bush, who pulled back from talks, and made it clear they thought it was a waste of time.

He appointed a UN ambassador, who pretty much publicly denounced the UN as useless and pointless.

While I have no doubt Obama will eventually earn a Nobel Peace Prize, it is premature to give him one this early. If he can get a good mid-East peace treaty, or makes some major break through in an international crisis, then he will live up to the award.

This year's award is a down payment on future expectations.

He's gotten off to a good start in working to reverse the global anti-Americanism (even in some of our allies) caused by Bush/Cheney.

The Nobel Committee said he won it for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples".

it is like giving a young person a jacket or baseball mitt that is a few sizes too big, because you know he will grow into it during the next few years.

the other contender was sarah palin for single-handedly crushing john mccain's presidential chances. this saved us from WWIII and economic collapse.

You guys would complain if Jesus Christ got the prize for his message of peace, because he only "talked" but didn't actually doing anything.

i have to admit, i've had a good laugh about it all day. My favorite is a status report from a friend who noted that he just won the nobel peace prize while fixing a flat on i-95

Of course I expected this. As soon as I heard the news, I knew Spencerblog would post a negative.
So lets see. Our President gets the nobel peace prize and most conservatives give a thumbs down. The US looses its Olympic bid and most conservatives give it a thumbs up! Limbaugh says he sides with the Taliban on this one. Hannity plays a mocking "all we are saying is give peace a chance" I can't believe all of this anti American behavior!

Bob: The Nobel has lost it's prestige, when the likes of, Le Duc Tho of North Vietnam or when Mikhail gorbachev, the dictator of all of Eastern Europe wins, instead of Ronald Reagan, and keeping in mind, that Reagan won the cold war without a shot being fired, now there is a real peaceful solution to a world that was on the edge of war. The truth is that the liberals have highjacked this prize, among others. Actually the only reason to win would now, would be the money given.

Anon - Maybe you should get a copy of "How the Cold War Ended" by Reagans ambassador to Moscow , Jack Matlock. Then you might understand why Gorbachev recieved the Peace Prize. And rightly so.

Reagan won the cold war? Really?
Did Putin get that memo?

What Reagan DID do was escalate the arms race with Russia, beyond the ability of their economy to afford. We got saddled with massive debt that we are still paying off.

If George Bush won the prize, conservatives would treat it like a holy icon.
