Profile in Courage

Listening to "The People," Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, will raise taxes and fees instead of cutting services.

Brilliant. Will the last businessman to leave the city please turn out the lights.

Nutter can't win, Gil. Can't get around closing certain libraries and fire stations without an outrage, can't get the lazy members of city council to cut their own lofty budgets. Last month's Philadelphia Magazine listed a number of suggestions for attacking the deficit, but even they were on the extreme end.

I'm hoping this is a scare tactic but I wouldn't take any surprise when/if it happens. I still believe Nutter's the best man for the job - despite the budget difficulties.

I feel for Nutter, who is a thoughtful man trying to do his best for the City. But he's gotta cut services, close some libraries and fire houses and reign is some other spending. The residents are just on the welfare, big-government gravy trained, all paid for by business who would be increasingly smart to get the hell out of the City.
