Permitted to Defend Others and Himself

Armed citizen saves boy attacked by pitbulls in Upper Darby.

A bystander with a North Carolina concealed weapon permit fired several shots into the ground and shot the dog in the leg, police said. The dog was later euthanized. The youth, of the 7100 block of Locust Street, was able to get away.

The Glendale Road resident, 25, who scared off the dogs, was not charged.

Not charged? He should be given a medal. Just another example of what a gun in the right hands can do.

Gil - A baseball bat or a rock would have worked as well, or maybe just a loud noise. It's not like the dogs knew what a gun is.
What if he shot the kid by accident?

Back to posting as plain Bob.

What if?

What if it was your child being attacked by a pit bull? Would you criticize the person who saved him because of the manner in which he protected him?

I hope not.

Sometimes a gun is the best means of defense against a vicious dog or a violent criminal.

Millions of crimes are prevented each year by people with guns. Gun scaredy cats need to get over their fears and recognize guns are like any other tool. In the right hands they can be very valuable.

Gil - Millions of crimes prevented. Millions? Sounds like some gun lobby propaganda.
What kinds of crimes? Simple muggings, burglaries?
Here, read some counter stats

Gun advocates put more guns in the wrong hands. More suicides and accidental gun deaths than lives saved.

Yeah. Millions.

Read John Lott's More Guns, Less Crime. Here's an interview with him.

Or call him if you like. He lives in Swarthmore.

Baaahb Bohne:

Your irrational fear of guns is, well, irrational. If baseball bats, rocks or a loud noise are just as effective, why are the president, world leaders, and celebrities always surrounded by armed security? Why don't the police use baseball bats, rocks or noise makers? Why don't we put police armed with baseball bats, rocks and noise makers in our schools? Why don't we give our teachers baseball bats, rocks and noise makers?

Probably makes you sad that there weren't any baseball bats, rocks, or noise makers at VA Tech. Think of how many lives could be saved if everyone carried baseball bats, rocks, and noise makers.

I think I will trade in my Glock for a shiny metal baseball bat, a jagged sharp rock, and a hand held voice recorder with Obama's voice on it. That will keep me and my family safe.

Thank you Baaaahb Bohne.

yeah, I don't like talking baseball bats. A friend of mine was killed in 1994 through excessive blows from two metal baseball bats.

Carter- just as effective against DOGS, and a bit safer so you don't shoot a kid by accident.

Very sad that your friend was killed by a criminal. Even sadder was that there wasn't a police officer there to protect him, or an armed citizen, or a gun (in your friend's possession).

Steve-
Sorry about your friend.
If Shields had his way, the rats that killed your friend would have as easy access to guns as baseball bats.
Why does Shields need an attack dog if he has guns? Is he looking to arm it with doggie guns?

My dog is not an attack dog, she is very sweet and my kids love her! As for the criminals access to guns, it is tiresome to hear nitwits such as you claim that my pro gun position makes it easier for criminals to access weapons. Get a grip. Criminals don't follow any laws and the only way for us to be protected from them is to be armed. I am sure that you know that you have no rights to police protection.

She is not ugly and I would let her bite your sorry a$$ for saying so. She is a very special doberman and comes from parents who are real champions.
