Walk Back from Osama

Obama used to think that capturing or killing Osama bin Laden was essential to our national security. Not any more.

UPDATE: Better to get all the backpeddling out of the way early.

""We will kill bin Laden. We will crush al-Qaeda. That has to be our biggest national security priority."

The word "that" refers to "We will crush al-Qaeda" as the priority, not killing bin Laden.
It is possible to kill bin Laden without crushing al-Qaeda. It is also possible to crush al-Qaeda, without finding bin Laden.

While it would be nice to do both, the priority has to be crushing al-Qaeda, since bin Laden doesn't do any of the killing himself.

And of course, bin Laden will still be targeted. I bet we do get him under Obama administration.

Don't forget that Bush is the one that said:
"..Terror is bigger than one person..So I don't know where [Bin Laden] is..You know, I just don't spend that much time on him, Kelly, to be honest with you. ...I'll repeat what I said. I truly am not that concerned about him."

* March 13, 2002 Press Conference at the The James S. Brady Briefing Room

The difference is that Obama is concerned about bin Laden and understands that if he can't be killed, he needs to be neutralized.

Gee, another broken Obama promise. They're running about one-a-day now. And he hasn't even taken office yet!

Bush's "dead or alive" is the broken promise. Obama hasn't broken any promise on bin Laden and al-Qaeda.
